blind leading the blind
I went to vegas for a few days and it was very nice. Honestly I expected it to be warmer, but anything is nicer than 15 and hailing. moving on.
We stayed for the first three nights at "Treasure Island." It was a nice place, chosen for a specific reason. I thought there would be pirates. Wouldn't you think?
NO PIRATES. Certifiably PIRATE-FREE. I was devasted.
moving on.
One of the oddest things I saw while in Las vegas had nothing to do with prostitutes, two foot long hotdogs, giant M&M characters, or mile long buffets.
I saw a blind girl in a fancy hotel- she was about 14 or 15, in the company of parents and siblings, and completely blind. Keep reading.
She was dressed in super shining silver track pants that fell at her shins, and brightly colored shiny coat with a contrasting tshirt underneath, dark lipstick and eye makeup, and a neon orange long hair wig. She certainly caught my eye. And sorry, I had no problem staring. What? Let me remind you, she couldn't see me.
This makes me ponder the nature of parental relationshsips with disabled children. To what extent do parents of a blind child carry the repsonsibility to advise the child as to aesthetics. My immediate thoght is that a parent would want the child to fit in as best he or she could and try to compensate for the lack a sense by having the child raised in an otherwise very normal fahion. Instead this family chose to dress this kid, or alllow the kid to dress thermselves in a garish, clownlike manner. She wore makeup that I would never allow my child near, she looked like a cokehead hooker reapllying layer after layer before her next john- and she was so young. The bright orange wig stood out above every other weirdo in the casino. I couldn't take my eyes off her. How could anyone get past her disability with that glaring reminder. It's like tricking hte girl into wearing a "BLIND FREAK" Tshirt. An otherwise normal perosn who happens not to be able to see is turned into a walking exhibit qualifying for the circus. Something so everyday and normal is mutated into a spectacle. I just wished I could have sat down withthe parents and just asked why they would allow, or force this to happen. The two parents were very normally dressed, as were all the siblings. Was it a cruel joke, what was it? Did the girl know how she looked or have any clue?
